Standard Pathway
The AMC examination route for international GPs who do not qualify for the Expedited or PEP pathways.
The Standard Pathway is the traditional route to medical registration in Australia for international medical graduates whose qualifications are not eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway or the Practice Experience Pathway (PEP). This route requires passing the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examinations and completing a period of supervised practice before you can apply for fellowship and ultimately specialist registration.
While this is the longest pathway, it is the most broadly accessible. It is open to any qualified medical practitioner regardless of which country you trained in or what postgraduate qualifications you hold. Many GPs have successfully used this route to build rewarding careers in Australia.

Full journey from PSV to specialist registration
The minimum AMC pathway cost (MCQ + Clinical + AHPRA provisional) is approximately $7,146 AUD. The wide range in the total reflects variation in training program fees, number of exam attempts, and travel costs. Candidates who pass all exams on first attempt and choose a shorter training pathway will be at the lower end.
All fees are approximate and subject to change. Re-sitting an examination incurs additional fees. Check the AMC, AHPRA, RACGP, and ACRRM websites for current fee schedules before planning your budget.
When Should You Choose This Pathway?
The Standard Pathway is typically the right choice when:
- You do not hold MRCGP, MICGP, or FRNZCGP (ruling out the Expedited pathway)
- Your qualifications are assessed as "not comparable" by RACGP (ruling out PEP)
- You trained in a country whose GP training is not recognised as equivalent to Australian standards
- You are early in your career and have not yet completed specialist GP training in your home country
Before committing to this pathway, we strongly recommend checking whether you qualify for the Expedited or PEP pathways first. Use our registration checker tool to get a quick assessment based on your qualifications and experience.
