Documents Checklist

Valid passport (certified copy)

Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended travel date. Ensure you have blank pages for visa stamps. A certified copy will be required for most applications.

Birth certificate

Full birth certificate (not a short-form extract). If not in English, you will need a NAATI-certified translation.

Marriage certificate or change of name documentation

Required if your name differs from what appears on your qualifications or other documents.

Current driver's licence

You can drive on your overseas licence for the first 3-6 months in most Australian states. An International Driving Permit is useful but not mandatory for UK licence holders.

Passport-sized photographs (x6)

Recent photographs meeting Australian passport photo specifications. Some visa and registration applications require physical photos.

Primary medical degree certificate

Your MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent degree certificate. An original or certified copy will be needed.

Full academic transcripts

Complete transcripts from your medical school showing all subjects studied and grades achieved across all years.

Specialist or postgraduate certificates

MRCGP/MICGP/FRNZCGP completion certificate with CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) or CSCST, membership or fellowship certificates from relevant Royal Colleges, and any additional postgraduate qualifications.

MRCGP (with CCT) or equivalent qualification evidence

Proof of completion of GP specialty training. You must hold a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) or CSCST alongside your MRCGP, MICGP, or FRNZCGP. If you completed training through a portfolio route, include the full portfolio evidence.

GMC registration certificate (or equivalent)

Current registration certificate from the General Medical Council, Medical Council of Ireland, or your home country's medical regulatory body.

Certificate of Good Standing

Must be issued within the last 3 months and confirm your registration status, any conditions, undertakings, or fitness-to-practise history. Request this directly from the GMC or equivalent body.

Comprehensive CV / curriculum vitae

Detailed CV covering your full career history with no unexplained gaps. Include dates of employment, employer names, duties performed, and reason for leaving each position.

Employment references (minimum 2-3)

Written references from recent employers or supervisors, ideally on letterhead, confirming your role, dates of employment, clinical competence, and professional conduct. At least one should be from your current or most recent employer.

IELTS Academic or OET results (if applicable)

Most UK-trained GPs who completed their medical degree in English at a recognised institution may be exempt from English language testing. However, if your primary medical qualification was not taught entirely in English, you will need IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 in each band) or OET (minimum B in each component). Results are typically valid for 2 years from the test date.

UK police clearance (DBS or ACRO certificate)

An ACRO Police Certificate is required for visa applications. This is different from a standard DBS check. Apply through ACRO Criminal Records Office. Processing typically takes 10-15 business days but can take longer.

Police clearance from each country lived in for 12+ months (since age 16)

You must provide police clearance certificates from every country in which you have lived for a cumulative total of 12 months or more since turning 16. This includes time spent during electives, placements, or working abroad. Processing times vary significantly by country, so start these applications early.

Health examination (via Bupa Medical Visa Services panel)

Must be completed through a Bupa Medical Visa Services panel physician. Includes general medical examination, chest X-ray, and blood tests (HIV, Hepatitis B and C). As a healthcare worker with patient contact, you are subject to additional screening. Results are submitted directly to the Department of Home Affairs. Valid for 12 months.

Skills assessment outcome letter

If required for your visa subclass, a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority (typically the Australian Medical Council or relevant specialist college).

Employer nomination letter

For employer-sponsored visas, your sponsor will provide nomination documents including the approved nomination number, employment contract, and evidence of the genuine position.

AHPRA registration certificate (when obtained)

Once you have obtained your AHPRA registration, keep a copy of the certificate for your records and for any subsequent visa or employment applications.
